Khatam is a highly skilled traditional Iranian form of marquetry. The incredibly intricate star patterns are made by binding together thin structural rods of different materials-usually brass (for the gold parts), camel bone (for the white parts), and dyed woods-and then slicing them into thin veneers to stick onto the base.
